What We Should Know About PFAS?

PFAS, are chemicals used in many products ranging from T-shirts to food packaging. PFASs can leach into water supplies where they can contaminate the water with these chemicals. 

There is currently no safe level of PFAS exposure and people should avoid water that contains high levels of these chemicals. There are several ways to avoid PFAS pollution this summer:

1) Use caution when using products with PFASs. Do not touch them directly; instead, let them cool off first. 

2) Avoid touching your skin or clothing after being in contact with water that contains high levels of PFAS. 

3) If you must wash something that has been exposed to PFASs, use a laundry detergent that is certified free of these chemicals. 

4) If you live in an area where the potable water supply contains high levels of PFASs, consider using bottled water or filtering your own water.

What are the effects of PFAS on the body?

PFASs are a group of chemicals used in many products, including water treatment systems. PFASs can leach out of these products and end up in the environment or the bodies of people who come into contact with them. There is still much we don’t know about the long-term effects of PFAS exposure on humans, but studies have shown that some of these chemicals can have negative effects on the body.

 PFASs can interact with the hormone estrogen and disrupt its function. This could lead to problems like increased breast cancer risk, fertility problems, and obesity. They also have been linked to other health issues like liver damage, kidney damage, and thyroid problems. In some cases, pregnant women who are exposed to high levels of PFASs may give birth to children with lower birth weights.
